how we got here
Hi. My name is D E Foster. People just call me "D."

For the past 12 years, I've worked as an author, podcaster, and medical researcher supporting individuals like myself, people who have been afflicted with a chronic neurological condition called BIND. It is an amazing community, and I'm so proud of the work we've done.
But, that's not why I'm here today.
While I still struggle with BIND myself, there comes a point in everyone's life when it's time to move on.
In June 2026, I stepped down from my positions in the benzo/BIND community. In part, to take care of my own health; but equally so, to head in a new direction. Something influenced by, but distinctly different from the work I'd done these past dozen years.

And so, A Calm Voice was born.

the new podcast
*** Launching Fall 2026 ***

Life can feel loud. There's always something competing for your attention. News. Social media. Endless opinions. Sometimes, you just need a quiet place to think.
A Calm Voice is that place.
A cornerstone of my seven years podcasting is simply this: "This is me, warts and all." I share my true self with you, fatally flawed and far from perfect. No filters. No AI. In this modern age where reality is in question, sharing our shortcomings may be the purest form of true human connection.
Each episode of this podcast is a friendly conversation about life. No shouting. No drama. Just honest reflections, mindful moments, and thoughtful conversations meant to help you breathe a little easier. I hope you'll check it out.

a bit more background
Not that you asked, but here's a bit more about me.

I've spent the last dozen years or so dealing with a neurological condition called BIND. I've had over 70 distinct symptoms, some debilitating, and it's touched every aspect of my life. I've even lost friends to it along the way. It's been a bitch; I won't sugar coat it.
At the same time, it’s also been one of the biggest teachers I’ve ever had.
When you go through something like this, you learn a ton about yourself, about what real hardship looks like, and most importantly, about how to survive. For me, that included keeping busy, when I was able. I wrote a book, hosted two podcasts, trained doctors, coached clients, founded various support organizations, and co-authored several research papers, including the very first study that identified BIND.

But one of the biggest frustrations I faced early on was realizing I couldn’t do much to help people heal faster. I could answer questions, validate what they were going through, and offer a few suggestions… but I couldn’t speed up time. And yet, there was an area where I could make a difference.

If I couldn't do much to heal their symptoms directly, perhaps I could help them ease their anxiety, fear, and hopelessness that comes with it. I could connect them with a community that understood, and remind them they weren’t alone. As I did this, I soon discovered that the more honest and open I was about my own struggles and failures, the more people connected with me. It made me feel less like an “expert” and more like a friend who was in the trenches with them. And I think that made a real difference.

I also discovered that people with BIND weren’t my only listeners and clients. Folks dealing with chronic anxiety, or just the general messiness of life, started showing up too. It seemed my story and message resonated more broadly than I ever thought they would.
And so, I decided to launch A Calm Voice. A podcast for anyone seeking a friendly conversation about life and all its complications.

Anyway, I’ll stop there for now. But if you’re a glutton for punishment and want to hear even more about my background (fair warning: I have a tendency to ramble), just click the button below.
