- Insights from Ireland: Conversation with Dr. Colin Bradley (Part II)
Dr. Colin Bradley is a physician, professor, and a 2017 Fulbright Scholar. He has studied the opioid and benzodiazepine crises in both the U.S. and Ireland; and was appointed as an advisor to the Irish government on benzodiazepines. In Part II of our conversation, Dr. Bradley shares insights on tapering protocols and timing, discusses the ‘pill for every ill’ culture, and explores methods of easing the burden of withdrawal through counseling and tool development. His messages to both physicians and patients are educated and insightful. Check it out. Video ID: BFP088 Listen to the Podcast This episode is part of a 2-part series. He was also fortunate to be awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2017, which enabled him to travel to the US to study the opioid crisis. Around 2000, Colin was appointed to a group set up to advise the Irish government on benzodiazepines. This group published a report on benzodiazepine prescribing at that time and made a number of recommendations on how prescribing of these medicines could be improved and made safer. He is now working with a group of academics and people who have experienced issues with benzodiazepine use, and withdrawal to co-design some strategies to help better manage benzodiazepine related issues in primary care. - Happy 5th Anniversary to the Alliance for Benzodiazepine Best Practices
Five Years and still going strong! Join Easing Anxiety in wishing the Alliance for Benzodiazepine Best Practices a wonderful 5th anniversary! If you haven't heard of the Alliance for Benzodiazepine Best Practices (Alliance) before, it might be time you checked them out. Their work in the areas of benzodiazepine awareness, education, and patient support is ground-breaking and so varied that it is difficult to list in a single post. They continually make progress in the areas of reform initiatives, scientific research and articles, prescriber education, regulatory reform, and much more. Their website is a valued resource and provides "easily-accessible evidence-based information" for the patient, in addition to helpful medical information for prescribers. I have had the privilege of working with the Alliance on a variety of projects — in particular with Bernie Silvernail (founder) and Dr. Alexis Ritvo (medical director) who is also my fellow co-chair at the Benzodiazepine Action Work Group. I am also on a research team supported by the Alliance. I must admit that it has been a true pleasure to work with this team these past few years and that I am truly grateful for the experience and knowledge gained. Here is the mission of the Alliance to learn more about their focus: The Alliance for Benzodiazepine Best Practices’ primary objective is to significantly reduce the number of benzodiazepine withdrawal sufferers by reducing the number of new prescriptions for benzodiazepines and Z-drugs, limit the duration of use, and provide an evidence-based pathway for deprescribing. Our focus is to illustrate the problems associated with benzodiazepines, illuminate alternatives to their use, and provide tools for clinicians to assist benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome sufferers. A complementary objective is to develop and promote best practices in benzodiazepine prescribing and problem management. As part of their anniversary celebration, the Alliance for Benzodiazepine Best Practices will be offering a 100% match on all donations made to the organization until April 21st. If you've ever considered donating to support the work they do, now is a great time. Our deepest thanks to the Alliance for all of their work in the benzo community over the past five years. - Benzodiazepine-Induced Brain Injury: The Hidden Prescription Epidemic (Recorded Live Oct. 28, 2021)
This presentation was recorded live at the 2021 Annual Meeting for the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention, and is presented here on our channel courtesy of that organization. Please visit their website via the links below. Presented at… Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention – 2021 Annual Meeting October 28, 2021 Presented by… Benzodiazepine Action Work Group (BAWG) Watch the Video …on YouTube Chapters 0:00:00 Introduction 0:00:54 Presentation: D E Foster 0:08:55 Presentation: Nicole Lamberson, PA 0:30:17 Presentation: Alexi Ritvo, MD 0:51:20 Presentation: John Staight 1:03:50 Q&A Event Description There is a growing crisis of patient harm from prescribed benzodiazepines, a class of medications traditionally prescribed for anxiety, sleep and anesthesia. While benzodiazepines have some limited indications, they are often prescribed in the absence of adequate research and for far longer than the recommended time limitation of 2-4 weeks. In September 2020, the FDA added a black box warning to prescription benzodiazepines. This warning states that “Physical dependence can occur when benzodiazepines are taken steadily for several days to weeks, even as prescribed.” And that “Stopping them abruptly or reducing the dosage too quickly can result in withdrawal reactions, including seizures, which can be life-threatening.” Unfortunately, much of the public and many healthcare providers are unaware of this warning. Studies report 10-44% of chronic benzodiazepine users experience moderate to severe protracted withdrawal symptoms upon cessation lasting months to years; some have suggested calling this phenomena “Benzodiazepine Induced Brain Injury” or “Benzodiazepine Injury Syndrome”. This session looks at the benzodiazepine crisis from the perspectives of medical professionals, affected patients, and community organizers. The goal of this session is to increase knowledge about safer prescribing and deprescribing of benzodiazepines. - Benzodiazepine sales expected to hit $3.1 billion by 2032
According to a press release in Digital Journal from March 17, 2023, the "market for benzodiazepine medications is expected to reach US $3.1 billion by the end of 2032." This is an increase of approximately $800 million since 2022. The compound annual growth (CAGR) is expected to be 2.8% globally for benzodiazepines, and as high as 3.0% for alprazolam (Xanax) specifically. The article attributed the increase in demand to "the rising frequency of anxiety disorders and elevated levels of stress among the world's population," and that the North American market is "expected to be the most advantageous for benzodiazepine drug producers in the future years." For those of us focused on the overprescribing of benzodiazepines and the detrimental effects these drugs can have on those who have taken them long-term, this is very concerning news. While we continue to focus on education and awareness — both in the medical and public sectors — the increase in anxiety, panic attacks, and stress-induced mental disorders is a difficult tide to stem. While the article identifies fast-paced lifestyles, poor work-life balance, and rapid urbanization as the primary causes of this increase, other factors such as the pandemic, social media, and geo-political instability have been noted and may be equally responsible for the increase. We will continue to monitor the benzodiazepine and Z-drug markets and keep you informed. REFERENCES "Sales Of Benzodiazepine Drugs Are Anticipated To Reach US$ 3.1 Billion By 2032." Digital Journal.
